How to ace in-person interviews!

July 27, 2023

Congratulations! You've landed an in-person interview, and now it's time to put your best foot forward. In-person interviews can be nerve-wracking, but with the right preparation, you can ace the interview and increase your chances of landing the job. Here are some tips to help!

Research the company

Before the interview, take some time to research the company. Look at their website, read about their products or services, and familiarise yourself with their mission statement and values. This will not only show the interviewer that you're interested in the company, but it will also help you answer questions more effectively.

Follow them on social media

See what they are doing both in and out of the office, see what their culture is like to help identify if it is a good fit for you. Look through their team on LinkedIn and research the profiles of the people you will be meeting, from this note some interesting questions to ask during the interview.

Dress appropriately

First impressions matter, and your appearance is a big part of that. Dress professionally, even if the company has a more casual dress code. Make sure your clothes are clean, ironed, and fit properly. Avoid wearing anything too flashy or distracting - most importantly dress for the industry you will be working in - if it a design agency a suit is probably not the best fit 🤣 however, it you are working in finance then the suit it is!

Practice common interview questions

There are common interview questions that come up in almost every interview. Practice answering questions like "Tell me about yourself" and "What are your strengths and weaknesses?" so you can answer confidently and effectively.

Bring copies of your resume

Bring several copies of your resume with you to the interview. When you sit down at the table offer copies to everyone you are meeting, this will show the interviewers that you're prepared and organised.

Arrive early

Arriving late to an interview is a major no-no. Plan to arrive at least 10-15 minutes early so you have time to find the building and get settled. If you arrive too early, wait in your car or a nearby coffee shop until it's closer to your interview time.

Make eye contact and smile

During the interview, make sure to make eye contact with the interviewer and smile. This will show that you're engaged and interested in the conversation.

Follow up with a thank-you note

After the interview, follow up with a thank-you note or email. Thank the interviewer for their time and reiterate your interest in the position. This is a simple gesture that can set you apart from other candidates.

In conclusion, acing an in-person interview takes preparation, confidence, and professionalism. By researching the company, dressing appropriately, practicing common interview questions, arriving early, making eye contact and smiling, and following up with a thank-you note, you can increase your chances of landing the job.
