What you need to know about a career in UX, UI and Product Design!

Here’s our break down of the day to day life in each role and what you can expect to be paid:

 

1- UX Designer

 

Rates of Pay:

Junior Role - (1 - 2yrs) £25,000 - £40,000

Mid-Level Role - (2 -4yrs) £40,000 - £55,000

Senior Role - (4 - 6yrs)  £55,000 - £75,000

Lead Role - (6 - 8yrs) £75,000 - £95,000

Director / Head of Role - (8 - 10yrs) £95,000 upwards

 

User experience designers are in high demand - Over 80% of hiring managers have made recruiting UX designers their number-one priority in 2021.

UX designers are ultimately responsible for enhancing customer experience and enjoyment, making them integral to branding and business.

They convey extensive research into the customer’s requirements and use these findings to make key design decisions.

The UX designer ensures that the project is user-friendly and appropriate for its purpose.

As a UX designer you may find yourself creating user personas, creating prototypes, sketching wireframes, or organising user testing in different projects.

You are the empath on the project who can understand and relate to how users engage with the product.

 

2. UI designer

Rates of Pay:

Junior Role - (1 - 2yrs) £25,000 - £40,000

Mid-Level Role - (2 -4yrs) £40,000 - £60,000

Senior Role - (4 - 6yrs)  £60,000 - £75,000

Lead Role - (6 - 8yrs) £75,000 - £90,000

Director / Head of Role - (8 - 10yrs) £90,000 upwards

 

User Interface design focuses on the user’s visual experience, establishing how they interact with the product interface.

A UI designer will devise all the screens through which a user navigates and creates all the visual points of reference and interactions that facilitate this movement.

They manage the journey of a user when engaging with a digital product ensuring simple and effective engagement.

 

As a UI designer you may find yourself creating boards to share assets and mood boards to help shape a customer's perception of a brand.

The role offers a variety of activities on a daily basis ranging from creating animations, style guides, establishing brand colours and typeface, iconography, prototyping and testing.

UI designers might work on apps, websites, video games and software; anything with an interface!

You design the world map ready for the creative journey.

3. Product designer

 

Rates of Pay:

Junior Role - (1 - 2yrs) £30,000 - £45,000

Mid-Level Role - (2 -4yrs) £45,000 - £60,000

Senior Role - (4 - 6yrs)  £60,000 - £75,000

Lead Role - (6 - 8yrs) £75,000 - £100,000

DIrector - Head of Role - (8 - 10yrs) £100,000

 

The day to day life of a product designer is creating the end to end experience. A product designer is concerned with both the beauty and functionality of a product.

Product designers coordinate user research before planning their ideas and generating blueprints using specialised software.

Together with Product Managers and Engineers, they then turn sketches into prototypes, ready for testing.

 

When designing for digital products you will find your work impacts the whole product life cycle, everyone is reliant on your delivery being perfect.

You are responsible for finding the most efficient production methods, so an understanding of different tools and agile processes is essential.

New entrants often need a degree and soft skills such as communication and great teamwork.

One of the best rewards in this role is the opportunity to pioneer change, which may be why Generation Z has recently voted it the most appealing job role to specialise in.
